Hollywood icon Michael Douglas, now 80, is largely embracing a period of semi-retirement from acting, having last appeared on screen in the 2024 Apple TV+ miniseries "Franklin." However, the veteran actor remains active in the film industry through his production company, Further Films, and recently celebrated a significant milestone: the 50th anniversary of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."
Douglas, who produced the critically acclaimed 1975 film, recently attended the Karlovy Vary Film Festival to present a newly restored print of the classic. He remarked on the enduring appeal of the Miloš Forman-directed movie, stating, "This is my first 50th anniversary. It's the first movie I ever produced. To have a movie that's so lasting, that people get a lot out of, it's a wonderful feeling. It's bringing back a lot of great memories." The film is set for a theatrical re-release in July, allowing new generations to experience its impact.
While "Franklin," where Douglas portrayed Benjamin Franklin, marked his last acting role filmed in 2022, he has openly discussed his decision to step back from the demanding schedule of on-set work. "I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop. I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intentions of going back," he shared in a recent interview.
Despite his stated intentions for a less active acting career, Douglas hasn't entirely closed the door. He indicated he would consider acting again "if something good comes up that I really like," but emphasized he doesn't feel a "burning desire." His focus appears to have shifted more towards producing and spending quality time with his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and their children, Dylan and Carys.
Douglas also briefly touched upon his role as Dr. Hank Pym in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, confirming that 2023's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" was likely his final appearance in the franchise. He expressed his enjoyment of the experience, particularly working with green screen technology for the first time.
Off-screen, Douglas continues to be a prominent figure, often seen attending events with his family. His son, Cameron Douglas, also recently starred alongside him in the unreleased film "Blood Knot," which is currently seeking distribution.
