A series of widespread internet outages in recent months has underscored the fragility of global digital infrastructure, with causes ranging from deliberate government shutdowns and major cyberattacks to physical damage to critical undersea cables. These disruptions have impacted millions, crippled essential services, and resulted in significant economic losses, sparking renewed concerns about the resilience and security of our increasingly connected world.

The most recent spate of disruptions includes recurring, albeit brief, internet shutdowns in Iraq throughout June 2025. The government has reportedly ordered these outages to prevent cheating during national school exams, a measure that highlights a growing trend of state-mandated internet restrictions.

This follows a year marked by a record number of government-imposed internet shutdowns. A report by digital rights organization Access Now revealed that 2024 saw an unprecedented number of deliberate disruptions by authorities worldwide, often in response to protests, political instability, or to control the flow of information during elections.

Throughout May 2025, users of popular services including TikTok, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Microsoft Office, and PayPal experienced significant disruptions. These incidents, often attributed to technical glitches or server-side errors, demonstrate how failures within a single company can have a cascading effect on millions of users globally.

While concerns about the potential impact of solar flares on internet connectivity have been a topic of discussion, with the sun currently in an active phase, there have been no major internet outages directly attributed to solar activity in the past year. Scientists maintain that the likelihood of a catastrophic "internet apocalypse" from a solar storm remains low.
