The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The former leader passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on Monday. He stated that the declaration of the public holiday is to allow Nigerians to mourn and reflect on the life and contributions of the former president.
"It is with a heavy heart that the nation mourns the passing of a great statesman and a dedicated public servant," the statement read. "In honor of his immense contributions to the development of our country, the Federal Government has declared a public holiday."
The holiday is part of a seven-day national mourning period, which was announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday. During this period, all flags in the country are to be flown at half-mast.
Former President Buhari, who served as the President of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, is remembered for his anti-corruption stance and his efforts to improve national security. His administration also oversaw significant infrastructure projects across the country.
Tributes have been pouring in from leaders across Nigeria and the world, lauding his commitment to the nation and his exemplary leadership. The late president is expected to be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in a private ceremony.
The government has urged all Nigerians to use the public holiday to offer prayers for the repose of his soul and for the nation. Public and private institutions across the country are expected to observe the holiday.
