A powerful line of severe thunderstorms rolled across central and southern Minnesota on Saturday evening and into the early hours of Sunday, June 29, 2025, spawning multiple reported tornadoes, causing significant power outages, and leaving a trail of damage. The National Weather Service (NWS) had issued a series of tornado warnings for several counties, including those in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
The most intense period of weather occurred as the storms moved through the west metro, where tornado sirens blared after midnight. The NWS confirmed a radar-indicated tornado near Victoria in Carver County. There were also numerous credible reports of funnel clouds and tornado touchdowns from trained spotters and law enforcement in areas including Hydes Lake, Cologne, and St. Bonifacius. Earlier in the evening, tornado sightings were reported further west near Canby, Marietta, and Danvers.
As of early Sunday morning, tens of thousands of residents across the affected regions were without power. Utility companies are working to restore service, but the extent of the damage to power lines and infrastructure is still being assessed. In addition to the tornadic activity, the storms brought large hail and damaging straight-line winds, downing trees and causing localized structural damage. Flash flood warnings were also in effect for some areas due to the heavy rainfall accompanying the storms.
The NWS will be conducting storm surveys over the coming days to confirm the number of tornadoes that touched down, their paths, and their intensity on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale. Residents in the affected areas are being advised to exercise caution, be aware of downed power lines and debris, and to check on their neighbors.
