Mazda has officially unveiled the third-generation CX-5, revealing a comprehensive redesign for its best-selling compact SUV. The 2026 model boasts a more sophisticated design, a larger and more tech-focused interior, and the long-awaited confirmation of a hybrid powertrain, which is slated to arrive for the 2027 model year.

The exterior of the 2026 CX-5 presents an evolutionary take on Mazda's "Kodo—Soul of Motion" design language. The result is a sleeker and more elegant appearance, with styling cues reminiscent of the larger CX-70 and CX-90. The vehicle has grown in size, translating to a more spacious cabin and increased cargo capacity, addressing a key area of competition in the crowded compact SUV segment.

Inside, the new CX-5 receives a significant technological upgrade. Dominating the redesigned dashboard is a new, larger touchscreen display, with some trims offering an expansive 15.6-inch screen. The infotainment system will be powered by Google Built-in, integrating familiar apps and services for a more seamless user experience.

Under the hood, the initial launch of the 2026 CX-5 will feature a familiar powertrain: a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. For the European market, this engine will be an e-SKYACTIV G variant, incorporating a mild hybrid system to improve fuel efficiency.

The most significant news for many prospective buyers is the confirmation of a full hybrid model. Mazda has announced that it will introduce its own in-house developed hybrid system for the CX-5, which will be available for the 2027 model year. This move is a direct response to the growing demand for electrified options and will position the CX-5 to compete more directly with hybrid stalwarts like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

The European market is set to receive the all-new CX-5 first, with sales beginning at the end of 2025. Other global markets, including North America, are expected to see the 2026 model arrive in showrooms during 2026. Further details on pricing and specific trim levels for each region will be released closer to the on-sale dates.
