France celebrated its national holiday, Bastille Day, on Monday with the traditional pomp of a military parade on the Champs-Élysées, set against a backdrop of heightened global tensions and a presidential call for a significant boost in defense spending. This year's celebration, marking the 236th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille prison, was distinguished by the honored presence of Indonesia.
In a striking display of international partnership, a 500-member contingent of Indonesian soldiers and police led the procession, a first for the Southeast Asian nation. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto watched from the presidential stand alongside his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, symbolizing the strengthening ties between the two countries.
The parade featured a spectacular display of French military might, with 65 aircraft and 28 helicopters soaring through the Parisian sky. Thousands of service members, along with cavalry and armored vehicles, marched down the famed avenue, showcasing France's military capabilities. Troops from Finland, Belgium, and Luxembourg also participated, highlighting European defense cooperation.
The festivities, however, were underscored by a serious message delivered by President Macron on the eve of the holiday. In a speech to the armed forces, Macron announced an additional €6.5 billion in military spending over the next two years. He cited "new and unprecedented threats," ranging from Russia's war in Ukraine to nuclear proliferation and cyberattacks, as the impetus for the increase.
"To be free in this world, we must be feared. To be feared, we must be powerful," Macron stated, emphasizing that freedom in Europe has never been so threatened since 1945. He also called for a "strategic dialogue" with European partners about the role of France's nuclear deterrent in continental security and specifically mentioned the importance of the partnership with Indonesia in refusing "the idea of blocs and imperialism in the Indo-Pacific."
Across France, the solemnity of the official ceremonies gave way to joyous celebrations as evening fell. In Paris, the iconic Eiffel Tower was the centerpiece of a spectacular fireworks and drone show, this year with a special theme celebrating the Brazil-France Season. Throughout the nation, cities and towns hosted traditional firefighters' balls, concerts, and public gatherings, allowing citizens to partake in the patriotic spirit of "le 14 juillet."
The spirit of Bastille Day also resonated globally, with French communities and Alliances Françaises from Minneapolis to Washington D.C. holding their own events, celebrating French culture, cuisine, and the revolutionary ideals of "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité" (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity).
