In a significant move to appreciate youth contributions and boost national development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved immediate federal civil service employment for 200 outstanding recipients of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) President's Honours Award. This announcement was made yesterday at the combined 2020-2023 President's NYSC Honours Award ceremony held in Abuja.

Beyond automatic employment, each of the 200 honorees will also receive a cash award of $\₦250,000$ and a scholarship to pursue postgraduate programs up to PhD level in any Nigerian university.

Demonstrating empathy and acknowledging sacrifice, President Tinubu also directed automatic employment for 10 physically challenged ex-corps members who sustained injuries during their national service. He lauded them as "heroes whose sacrifices will never be forgotten," emphasizing the government's commitment to their welfare.

Represented by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, President Tinubu commended all awardees for their "discipline, commitment, selflessness, teamwork, patriotism, and integrity." He reiterated his administration's dedication to youth empowerment, citing various youth-focused initiatives across education, skills development, technology, and entrepreneurship. "We remain firm in our resolve to put young people at the forefront of our economic and national development agenda," the President stated.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, lauded President Tinubu's unwavering support for Nigerian youth, highlighting the recent increase in corps members' monthly allowance from $\₦33,000$ to $\₦77,000$. He emphasized that this adjustment was a response to current economic realities and reflected the government's recognition of the vital role youth play in nation-building.

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the Director-General of the NYSC, praised the contributions of Nigerian youth to national progress, describing them as "a vital force for our collective progress and preservation of our social, cultural, and national heritage." He noted that the increased allowance has significantly boosted the morale and commitment of corps members.

General Nafiu also expressed optimism regarding the anticipated signing of the NYSC Trust Fund Bill into law, calling it a "landmark piece of legislation" poised to establish a sustainable funding framework for the scheme. He further revealed that the NYSC's Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program has been restructured to focus on "technology-driven and market-relevant training," with over 250,000 corps members trained annually.

In a related development, a Federal High Court in Abuja recently ordered the NYSC to allow female corps members to wear skirts in observance of their religious beliefs, ruling it as a breach of fundamental human rights to freedom of religion and human dignity. The court also awarded $\₦500,000$ in damages to each applicant for the violation of their rights.

These developments underscore the government's ongoing efforts to reform and strengthen the NYSC scheme, making it more responsive to the needs of Nigerian youth and aligned with national development objectives.
