Navigating the JAMB Registration Procedure: A Comprehensive Manual

An essential roadmap for prospective undergraduates in Nigeria
by Tue 17 Feb 2026

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) serves as the primary gateway for candidates seeking entrance into tertiary institutions across the federation. Embarking on the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration journey requires meticulous attention to detail and strict adherence to official protocols.

“Preparation is the key to a seamless registration experience. Candidates must ensure they possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN) before initiating any step in the process.”

To begin, an aspirant must create a profile by sending their unique eleven-digit NIN via Short Message Service (SMS) to either 55019 or 66019. This action triggers the generation of a Profile Code, a vital alphanumeric sequence required for all subsequent transactions.

Acquisition of the Registration e-Pin

Once the profile code is secured, the next phase involves the procurement of the registration e-Pin. This voucher serves as proof of payment for the examination, reading materials, and CBT center service charges.

Payment can be facilitated through various channels, including:

  • Commercial Banks (Over-the-counter or ATM)
  • Mobile Money Operators (MMOs)
  • Online Payment Gateways using Debit/Credit Cards
  • USSD codes provided by participating financial institutions
“Security Warning: Never share your Profile Code or e-Pin with unauthorized persons. JAMB strictly advises against using cybercafés for sensitive data entry to prevent identity theft.”

The Bio-metric Capture and CBT Center Workflow

With the e-Pin in hand, the candidate must proceed to an Accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) Center. Here, the finalization of the application occurs. This stage is crucial as it involves the digital capturing of ten fingers (biometrics) and a live photograph.

During this session, candidates are expected to provide details regarding:

  1. Choice of Institutions (Universities, Polytechnics, or Colleges of Education)
  2. Preferred Courses of Study
  3. Examination Town/Location preference
  4. O'Level results or ‘Awaiting Result’ status
“The integrity of the UTME depends on the accuracy of the biometric data provided. Any discrepancy between the NIN data and the JAMB profile may lead to disqualification.”

Concluding the Application

After the data entry is concluded, the CBT center operator will print a Registration Slip. This document contains the candidate's registration number, examination schedule, and the designated venue. It is imperative to verify all information on this slip before leaving the center. If errors are spotted, they should be rectified immediately at the point of registration.

As the examination date approaches, candidates should utilize the JAMB IBASS platform to stay abreast of syllabus changes and institutional requirements.
