Get the latest news on Scottie Scheffler, who was narrowly defeated by Rory McIlroy in a thrilling final-round duel at the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

In a final round for the ages at The 153rd Open Championship, Rory McIlroy captured an emotional victory on home soil, narrowly defeating World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in a dramatic Sunday duel that came down to the final hole.

Scheffler, who entered the final round with a one-stroke lead, played with the trademark consistency that has defined his era of dominance. He and McIlroy traded blows throughout the day, matching each other shot for shot along the windswept Dunluce Links. The pair were tied standing on the 18th tee, setting the stage for a climactic finish.

McIlroy, buoyed by the deafening roar of the Northern Irish crowd, hit a stunning approach shot to within six feet of the pin. Scheffler’s approach landed safely on the green but left him with a challenging 25-foot birdie putt to win. His putt slid just by the hole, and he tapped in for par to finish the tournament at 14-under par. With the pressure squarely on his shoulders, McIlroy calmly rolled in his birdie putt for a final-round 67, securing the Claret Jug with a winning score of 15-under par.

"You dream of moments like this, but you never know if they'll come," a tearful McIlroy said during the trophy ceremony. "To do it here, at Portrush, against the best player in the world in Scottie... it's indescribable."

Scheffler was gracious in defeat, congratulating McIlroy amidst the wild celebrations. "Rory played incredible golf today, and he deserved this," Scheffler told reporters. "The crowd was electric. Of course, I'm disappointed not to win, but I left it all out there. It was a special week, and to be part of a battle like that with Rory at his home Open is something I'll remember."

The runner-up finish caps another remarkable major season for Scheffler. He successfully defended his title at the Masters in April for his third green jacket and recorded top-10 finishes at both the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. Despite the loss, his performance at Royal Portrush further solidifies his position atop the Official World Golf Ranking.

With the major season now concluded, Scheffler will turn his attention to the upcoming FedExCup Playoffs, where he is in a commanding position to contend for the season-long title.
