Welsh Labour Senedd Member Hefin David has died suddenly at the age of 47. Read tributes from political leaders and learn more about the life and career of the dedicated public servant for Caerphilly

Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum following the sudden death of Hefin David, the Welsh Labour Member of the Senedd for Caerphilly, at the age of 47.

Mr. David, a respected politician and former lecturer, was found unresponsive at a property in the Caerphilly area on Tuesday evening. Gwent Police have stated that his death is not being treated as suspicious. He is survived by his partner, Vikki Howells, who is also a Senedd Member, and two children.

First elected to the Senedd in 2016, Mr. David was a dedicated public servant with a deep connection to his community. He was born in Caerphilly and had previously served as a local councillor for the St Cattwg ward. Prior to his political career, he was a senior lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Welsh Labour leader and First Minister Eluned Morgan expressed the party's profound sadness, describing Mr. David as a "much-loved member of the Labour family" and an "outstanding politician, warm and enthusiastic."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer also paid tribute, calling Mr. David "a powerful voice for the people of Wales and a committed public servant." He noted Mr. David's dedication to ensuring "every person and community in Wales had the opportunities and support they deserve."

Throughout his career, Mr. David was a passionate advocate for his constituents and a champion of various causes. His political interests included small firm development, employment, and improving access to further and higher education for those with additional learning needs. Drawing on personal experience with his daughter, he was a strong voice for families with relatives who have autism. He was also an advocate for freeholders facing estate management charges, campaigning for stronger laws to address what he termed "fleecehold."

The Presiding Officer of the Senedd, Elin Jones, reflected on his "enthusiasm for his constituents and their causes," and his ability to work across parties to "seek common ground."

Politicians from other parties, including the Welsh Conservatives, Plaid Cymru, and the Liberal Democrats, have also shared their condolences, with many highlighting his genuine nature, dedication, and the respect he commanded across the Senedd.
