German giants Bayern Munich and Portuguese champions Benfica played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw in a crucial FIFA Club World Cup Group C clash on Tuesday. The result sees both teams advance to the knockout stages of the revamped tournament.

The highly anticipated match, held at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, lived up to its billing as a tight and tactical affair. Bayern Munich, having already secured their place in the next round, entered the match with several changes to their starting lineup. However, it was the German side that started brighter, controlling possession and probing the resolute Benfica defense.

Despite Bayern's early dominance, it was Benfica who drew first blood against the run of play. In the 38th minute, a swift counter-attack saw forward Gonçalo Ramos latch onto a through ball and calmly slot it past the onrushing Manuel Neuer to give the Portuguese side a surprise lead heading into the halftime break.

The second half saw a more determined Bayern push for an equalizer. Manager Julian Nagelsmann introduced the likes of Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala to inject more attacking impetus. The pressure finally paid off in the 67th minute when Thomas Müller, a constant threat throughout the game, rose highest to head home a pinpoint cross from Joshua Kimmich, leveling the scores.

Both sides had opportunities to win the match in the closing stages. Benfica's defense, marshaled by the experienced Nicolás Otamendi, made several crucial blocks to deny Bayern a winner, while at the other end, a late Benfica appeal for a penalty was waved away by the referee.

The draw means Bayern Munich tops Group C with 7 points, while Benfica finishes second with 5 points, enough to see them through to the round of 16. The result also eliminates the other teams in the group from the competition.

Speaking after the match, Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann expressed his satisfaction with his team's performance, particularly in the second half. "We showed great character to come back from a goal down. It was a tough game against a very organized Benfica side, but we are happy to top the group and look forward to the knockout stages."

His Benfica counterpart, Roger Schmidt, praised his team's resilience. "To get a result against a team of Bayern's quality is a fantastic achievement. The players gave everything, and to qualify for the next round is a huge success for the club."

Both teams will now await the draw for the round of 16 to discover their next opponents in the prestigious global tournament.
