The city of Ibadan is in mourning following the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. The monarch, who ascended the throne as the 43rd Olubadan, died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, at the age of 90.
His death was confirmed by palace sources, sending a wave of sorrow across the ancient city and beyond. Oba Olakulehin's reign, though brief, was marked by his commitment to the peace and development of Ibadanland.
Born in 1935, Oba Olakulehin's journey to the throne followed the unique and revered traditional succession plan of Ibadan. He was officially installed and presented with the staff of office on July 12, 2024, in a grand ceremony that drew dignitaries from all walks of life.
Prior to his ascension, Oba Olakulehin was the Balogun of Ibadanland, a high-ranking chief in the Olubadan-in-council, and had diligently served the city in various traditional capacities, climbing the chieftaincy ladder over several decades.
The late monarch was a respected figure known for his wisdom and deep understanding of Ibadan's history and traditions. His reign was anticipated to bring further progress and unity to the sprawling metropolis.
As the news of his demise spreads, tributes have begun to pour in from prominent Nigerians, traditional rulers, and the people of Ibadan, who remember him as a peaceful and progressive leader.
The process for the selection of a new Olubadan is expected to commence in due course, following the age-long tradition of the city, which alternates the throne between the two ruling lines: the Otun (civilian) and the Balogun (military). The next in line to the throne is the Otun Olubadan.
The palace is expected to announce the formal funeral rites for the departed monarch soon. The city of Ibadan now enters a period of mourning to honour the memory of its late king.
